A man was found dead Thursday afternoon in his State Street apartment and police are treating his death as suspicious.
However, police also said all possibilities are open and nothing automatically pointed to an intentional death.
“It’s being treated as suspicious right now as a precautionary matter,” police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said Thursday evening.
Police were called to the 766 State St. apartment at about 1:15 p.m. to check the health and welfare of the male resident.
Dearing said that the situation appeared to be one where the person who alerted police hadn’t heard from the man for some period of time.
When police arrived, they found the man’s body. Police did not immediately release the man’s name, but said he was in his early 50s.
Dearing said the man’s age contributed to the cautious stance regarding his cause of death. The investigation will include the man’s medical history, he said.
“The autopsy is scheduled for (Friday),” Dearing said. “Obviously, once those results come back we’ll know quite a bit more about what happened.”
Police are to remain on the scene until more is known, he said.
