In the coming days, The Daily Gazette will celebrate a significant milestone: the launch of our new press.

For us here at the paper, the new offset press represents a commitment to our printed product and an affirmation of what we have done since 1894: print a daily newspaper. Our $2 million new offset press — actually a used press we purchased from a printing plant in New Jersey last summer — is a powerhouse that will carry us long into the future.

The new press replaces a Colormax flexographic press that has served us, and our readers, very well since 2003. While the printing quality off our old press was outstanding, it was expensive to run. But we’re confident our new press will continue our tradition of excellent print quality.

The new press will print a newspaper that is slightly smaller than the existing paper. Our paper is now 121⁄2 inches wide by 223⁄4 inches deep; the new paper will be 111⁄2 inches wide and 22 inches deep.

The new press also offers us more opportunities to print in color, opportunities we in the newsroom intend to use to showcase the great work of our photographers. Color capability is also good news to our advertising department, which appreciates the value color can bring to print ads.

To make the best use of the new press, we will also made some changes to how your newspaper is organized.

Our A section, the first section of the newspaper, will continue to include the top news of the day, as well as our business section. It will also include obituaries, now found in the Local section, as well as our daily package of weather, primetime TV listings and movie guide. The daily lottery results will remain on A2 of the paper.

The weekday Opinion page, which includes our local editorials, letters to the editor and syndicated columnists, will move to our Local section.

Thank you, in advance, for your support through this exciting change, one that will help us remain a strong, vibrant community newspaper.
