Prince, Puempel help Senators defeat Devils

Shane Prince scored three first-period goals, and Matt Puempel added two, including the game-winner

Shane Prince scored three first-period goals, and Matt Puempel added two, including the game-winner midway through the second period Sunday, lifting the Binghamton Senators to a 6-3 AHL victory over the Albany Devils at the Times Union Center.

Prince opened the scoring 2:31 into the game. He made it 2-0 2 1⁄2 minutes later.

Thirty seconds after that, Mike Hoeffel got the Devils on the scoreboard. Prince completed his hat trick with 10:39 left in the period, a goal that chased goalie Keith Kinkaid from the game. Kinkaid, the former Union College standout, failed to make a save and was replaced by Scott Wedgewood.

The Devils came back to tie the score, 3-3. Adam Larsson scored a power-play goal with 6:42 left in the first. Dan Kelly got the equalizer less than five minutes into the second.

But Puempel broke the tie at 9:35 of the second with power-play goal. Jim O’Brien’s goal with 8:38 left in the third period made it 5-2. Puempel clinched it on an empty-net goal with 51 seconds left.

“We spotted them a [two] goal lead right off the hop,” Devils coach Rick Kowalsky said. “What’s frustrating about tonight is they didn’t earn their goals. We shot ourselves in the foot. That’s a pretty good team to have to play from behind three or two all the time. It was frustrating because there were mistakes that didn’t need to happen.”
