UAlbany Women vs. Vermont: Craig pours in 22 as Danes win

Pick your poison with the University at Albany women’s basketball team. If opponents decide to double-team conference scoring and rebounding leader Shereesha Richards, there are plenty of other Great Danes who can make them pay.

Although Richards wasn’t as effective as she was the first time the teams played, when she poured in a school-record 41 points, she got plenty of help this time. Megan Craig, UAlbany’s 6-foot-9 junior center, produced 22 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots to lead three double-digit scorers, as the Danes stopped the Catamounts, 69-52, in the front end of the annual Big Purple Grown Saturday at SEFCU Arena.

“Either way, one of us is going to score. You can’t double-team both of us,” said Craig.

With 15 points, Richards pushed her season total to 474 points to set the UAlbany single-season scoring record. The previous record of 473 points was set by career scoring leader Ebone Henry, who graduated last year.

“I’m so proud of her,” said Craig of Richards. “We do what we can to help each other out.”

Tammy Phillip, a senior guard, also scored 15 points and had six rebounds and two steals.

“I’m thankful for Shereesha getting the record, but we still have to work hard. We have other people who can contribute and score on this team,” Craig said.

The Great Danes led by as much as 22 (56-34) with 10:31 left, and still held a 20-point cushion (67-47) with 2:29 to go.

“They were double-teaming me more than the first time we played them, and they left Megan open,” said Richards. “They have to decide on double-teaming one of us, but they can’t do both. Megan was more aggressive today, and she played her game.”

The two-time defending champion Great Danes improved to 9-0 in the America East Conference and 19-3 overall. They stretched their conference winning streak to 32.
