“Oil-o-Matic” was a key word for some people during the 1940s.

For others, “auction” “strike” and “international relations” were in personal vocabularies.

Williams “Oil-o-Matic” Heating was a Schenectady business that kept some city homes warm during cold weather.

People might have been looking for oil heaters at the Sears-Roebuck auction sale in 1946, but they probably didn’t find any. There seemed to be a big crowd in the store anyway, hoping to take home bargains won through bidding.

Some women were concerned with international relations, and met over banquet tables to discuss world issues.

Other women were concerned with work issues; they went on strike against their employers, Swan Cleaners. And while they carried picket signs, they also had smiles on their faces.
