A Scotia Fire Department lieutenant has been suspended with pay after an off-duty drunken-driving arrest in Glenville.
Michael Gieseler, 40, of Steadwell Avenue, Amsterdam, is accused of driving drunk and fleeing the scene of an accident Saturday night on Vley Road. Police said they caught up with him on Route 5 in West Glenville.
No one was injured in the crash, but police said the driver of the other car was a former girlfriend of Gieseler. The drivers had differing accounts of how the crash happened, police said, but neither alleged the crash was intentional.
Gieseler is charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and a traffic infraction for leaving the scene of a property damage accident. He was arrested just before 11 p.m. Saturday after police said they were notified about 20 minutes earlier of the crash near Foch Road.
The woman said she was attempting a left turn onto Foch Road when, police said, Gieseler struck her car as he tried to pass. Gieseler told police the accident happened as she hit the brakes, Glenville police spokesman Lt. Steve Janik said.
Gieseler fled the scene, police said, but pulled over when ordered,.
Scotia Mayor Kris Kastberg confirmed Tuesday that Gieseler is a paid village firefighter. Kastberg said Gieseler has been suspended with pay while an internal investigation is conducted. Kastberg declined to comment on the specifics of the investigation, however, calling it a personnel issue.
An attorney listed for Gieseler could not be reached Tuesday. Gieseler was issued tickets to appear Feb. 25 in Glenville Town Court.
