Upstate Shredding – Ben Weitsman at the Port of Albany acquired Capitol Scrap Metal Co. in Albany, the company announced Thursday.

Capitol Scrap Metal has been operating for 75 years at 201 Raft St. in Albany. The acquisition by Upstate Shredding will allow Capitol Scrap to consolidate its current yard.

“This facility is strategically located to help us continue to grow our Albany-region market, and to feed our new shredder and export facility at the Port of Albany,” said Adam Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding – Ben Weitsman.

The acquisition marks Upstate Shredding’s fourth since January. The company has been working to grow its facility in Albany as it prepares for a new $25 million shredder, expected to arrive at the Port of Albany in April.

Weitsman said he is looking to expand the company’s 18-acre property in Albany and hire 20 new employees over the next couple of months. Upstate Shredding currently has 30 employees.

Upstate Shredding – Ben Weitsman is based in Owego, Tioga County, with 17 locations in New York and Pennsylvania. The company is one of the largest scrap metal processor in the northeast.
