Billy Fuccillo Jr. attributes his success as a new auto dealer in the Capital Region to two things: hard work and his supportive parents.
The son of upstate auto giant Billy Fuccillo, who is known for his aggressive advertising and catchphrase “HUGE,” Fuccillo Jr. has made a name for himself in the auto industry, as well.
“I attribute it to my parents,” he said, “100 percent.”
At just 24, he already operates two auto dealerships in the Capital Region and one near Syracuse, and he does not plan on stopping there. Fuccillo Jr. said he hopes to expand, and as a lover of imports, he said his eyes and ears are always open to acquiring new import dealerships.
“I am an upstate New York guy,” he said. “I think that I only represent brands that I really believe in.”
Fuccillo Jr. attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2007 to 2011. After graduating, he worked at his father’s Kia and Hyundai dealerships in Schenectady.
“I just worked every day,” he said, “as hard as I could.”
In July 2012, at just 22, Fuccillo Jr. acquired his first dealership, a Nissan dealership near Syracuse.
“Nissan recognized my performance and offered me an opportunity there,” he said.
After his first month at the helm, sales soared. Today, Fuccillo Nissan of Clay is one of the top-performing Nissan dealers in the nation, according to Nissan North America.
In August, Fuccillo Jr. secured the Volkswagen dealership in Niskayuna, renaming it Fuccillo Volkswagen of Schenectady and cranking up the sales volume. It was the top-volume dealership in the Northeast in August, September and November, according to Volkswagen of America, which a company spokeswoman called an “extremely impressive” first four months.
“They are doing absolutely excellent,” Fuccillo Jr. said.
Most recently, he took over another Nissan dealership, this one in Latham. Sales there didn’t immediately surge like the others.
“We didn’t have a tremendous huge push our first month,” he said.
Nonetheless, Fuccillo Jr. said, the dealership did well, and he remains optimistic about its future.
“We are super-appreciative of the community,” he said. “The dealership I purchased was the Nemith, and we look forward to servicing their customers, serving their existing customer base.”
Growing up in the business and observing his father helped him along the way, Fuccillo Jr. said. Like his father, he works seven days a week.
“He taught me how to work hard,” he said. “I spent a lot of time with him growing up, at the dealership.”
While Fuccillo Sr. is easily recognizable from his television advertisements, Fuccillo Jr. prefers radio. He can sometimes be seen in TV commercials, but people are more likely to hear his voice on the airwaves.
“I enjoy doing the radio because I have fun with it,” he said. “TV is equally important, if not more important. I really enjoy the way my dad does the commercials. He represents upstate New York so well.”
Fuccillo Jr. said he has developed a fun and productive working environment at his dealerships. He said he and his team cannot wait to go to work in the morning.
Most of his sales team members are new to the car sales business. He likes this because they are all open-minded, especially to new technology and the evolving industry.
“We kind of take a fresh look at things,” he said. “It is a really, really fun environment at our dealerships.”
