After assisting motorist, Mayfield man killed in car accident

A Mayfield man who helped a woman change a tire was struck and killed by a motorist on state Route 3

A Mayfield man who helped a woman change a tire was struck and killed by a motorist on state Route 30 on Thursday.

Charles Vanevery, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:20 a.m. accident after being struck by Robert Haner, 84, of Northville, according to a release from State Police.

Police in the release said Vanevery and his brother Pearl B. Varney went to the scene to assist Darcy L. Lawton, 37, of Mayfield after the left front tire of her car came off.

The three were talking alongside the roadway after changing the tire when Haner, who was traveling south on Route 30, hit both Lawton and Vaneverey, according to State Police.

Lawton suffered leg injuries. She was taken by helicopter to Albany Medical Center Hospital for surgery, the injuries did not appear life-threatening, according to police.

An investigation is underway, and no tickets have been issued, according to the release.
