A 34-year-old Richmondville man is recovering from injuries he suffered Saturday night when he was gored by a buffalo in Richmondville.
Schoharie County sheriff’s deputies said the man, whom they did not identify, received a wound to his abdomen. He was admitted to Albany Medical Center and was still at the hospital on Monday.
Police said the man was part of a small team of men on Harraway Road that was preparing to load about 10 bison onto a cattle trailer for transportation to New Jersey. Just before 7 p.m., one of the animals charged the man; the buffalo used his head and horns to impale the worker.
Deputies said other men were able to rescue their colleague and called 911. When ambulance crews arrived, the man was conscious but having trouble breathing and in a lot of pain.
Sheriff Anthony F. Desmond said the man, who did not sustain internal injuries, was fortunate his injuries were not more severe.
“Those buffalo are big,” Desmond said. “They’re big and their heads are really large.”
