N.Y. State Canal Corp. seeks volunteers for Clean Sweep

Groups are being sought to perform beautification projects during the ninth annual Canal Clean Sweep

Groups are being sought to perform beautification projects during the ninth annual Canal Clean Sweep, April 25 through 27.

The New York State Canal Corp., in partnership with Parks & Trails New York, is planning the event in recognition of Earth Day 2014 and in advance of the 190th consecutive navigation season on the state canal system. The state Environmental Facilities Corp. is also sponsoring the event.

Groups are asked to organize a cleanup activity along the canalway, such as picking up litter and brush on lock grounds, helping to remove debris from a local canal park or preparing a section of canalway trail for the thousands of visitors who arrive each year.

The Canal Corp. and its partners will promote groups’ efforts with statewide news releases and will provide groups with a template to tailor to local media. Parks & Trails New York will also provide up-to-date event information and maintain a comprehensive listing of events taking place throughout the Clean Sweep weekend on its website, www.ptny.org/canalway/.

The Canal Corp. will provide trash bags and arrange for the disposal of collected and bagged trash. Registered groups will also receive free Canal Clean Sweep T-shirts.

Each group will be expected to provide its own tools, if needed, and work gloves.

To register a group, visit www.ptny.org/canalway/sweep/ no later than March 15. For additional information, contact Drew at canalsweep@ptny.org or 434-1583 extension 209.
