A duo from Troy has been charged with shoplifting over $13,000 worth of merchandise from Crossgates Mall, according to Guilderland police.

Melissa Russell, 23, of 44 Campbell Ave., and Scott Cleland, 26, of 100 Project Road, were reportedly trying to steal jewelry at the Macy’s department store at around 3 p.m. Sunday when they were arrested.

Police later discovered that the two had already $760 worth of merchandise from the Sprint store in the mall, including an iPad Air and a rechargeable battery case.

They have also been accused of stealing $12,292 worth of jewelry from the mall’s JC Penney store on Feb. 25.

Russell was found to be in possession of five oxycodone pills. She was charged with third-degree grand larceny, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Cleland was charged with third-degree grand larceny, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and fourth-degree attempted grand larceny.

Both were sent to the Albany County Jail without bail and will return to Guilderland Town Court Thursday.
