Ryan Haggerty scored two first-period goals, powering Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey tournament Friday at Houston Field House.

The seventh-seeded Engineers (15-14-6) take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. They can eliminate the 10th-seeded Big Green (8-18-4) with a win tonight at 7. A Dartmouth win would extend the series to Sunday.

Haggerty scored 4:39 into the first on the power play. He got his second one, which was his 26th of the season, with 9:59 left.

Shortly after RPI killed off a two-man disadvantage early in the second period, Jacob Laliberte scored to make it 3-0. Jesse Beamish got a power-play goal midway through the second for Dartmouth.

Zach Schroeder scored RPI’s final goal 1:06 into the third period.
