The ECAC Hockey Cleary Cup-champion Union Dutchmen will face Cornell in the conference tournament semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday at 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.

The fourth-seeded and 12th-ranked Big Red advanced to the semifinal after beating fifth-seeded Clarkson, 1-0, on Brian Ferlin’s goal with 7:28 left in sudden-death overtime.

The top-seeded and third-ranked Dutchmen (26-6-4) completed a two-game sweep of Dartmouth on Saturday with a 4-2 victory. Union is seeking its third straight Whitelaw Cup. Only two other teams have won three straight Whitelaw Cups in the league’s 53-year history. Cornell captured four straight from 1967 to 1970. Boston University won four in a row from 1974 to 1977.

Union won the season series from Cornell. In the Nov. 9 matchup at Messa Rink, the Dutchmen held the Big Red to 11 shots on goal in a 3-0 win. In the rematch Feb. 14 at Lynah, Matt Wilkins’ goal with 5:35 left in the first period snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Dutchmen to a 4-1 victory.

This will be the third postseason meeting between the two teams. Cornell swept Union in the 2008 quarterfinals at Messa by 3-2 scores. Two years later, Cornell defeated Union, 3-0, in the final ECACH championship game at the Times Union Center.
