Jim Murphy has been named as The Daily Gazette’s vice president of advertising.

Murphy comes to the Gazette from a position with GateHouse Media, a newspaper publisher based in Fairport.

According to the company’s website, GateHouse Media includes 404 community publications, more than 350 related websites and six yellow page directories.

Murphy has worked as senior group publisher for the company’s North Atlantic Division since January of 2012.

In that position, which he holds until Friday, he oversees about 20 print products in 13 communities in New York and Pennsylvania, including daily and weekly newspapers and their associated websites.

During his career, Murphy has worked with the advertising departments of approximately 100 newspapers in corporate and local roles. He worked as advertising and marketing director for the Post-Star in Glens Falls from May 2006 to June 2009.

“I bring a lot of exposure to both best practices and things not to do,” he said.

Murphy said he sees a lot of potential for advertising sales in the Capital Region.

“I just love the Capital District and all the things going on with technology and higher education and the arts and tourism. We’ve lived in this area for eight years now and I’m just seeing a ton of positive growth and positive energy, so I’m glad to be a part of that,” he said.

In his new position, Murphy will work to enhance the Gazette’s advertising revenue.

“It’s training, coaching, strategic planning, working with customers to ensure they are getting value for the investment they’re making,” he explained.

Murphy said he’s looking forward to being a part of the family-owned Gazette.

“There’s a whole different focus, I think, with family-owned media companies, locally owned media companies. All your investment of time and energy and resources is a reinvestment in the local property and the community,” he said.

“We are truly excited to bring a talented leader like Jim on board,” said Gazette Publisher John DeAugustine in an email. “His deep understanding of local advertising and tremendous media experience makes him a perfect fit to assist the team we have and to drive even better results for our customers.”

Murphy lives in Glens Falls with his wife, Mary, and their three children.

He replaces Gillian Doucette at the Gazette. Doucette left the vice president of advertising job to become advertising director for The Denver Post.
