Civil Service should fix Guilderland fields

State is responsible, it should pay

What a mess more than 2,000 wannabe civil servants made parking on the Farnsworth Middle School’s four-plus acres of athletic fields Saturday.

Don’t blame them. That’s where Guilderland school officials, who weren’t expecting so many people and were ambushed when more than 1,000 showed up for each of two tests, told them to park — because it would have been impractical and unsafe to have that many parking on the roadways around the school. Little did anyone know that the fields wouldn’t still be hard enough to support all those cars.

School officials may not have been prepared, but it hardly seems it was their responsibility.

Civil Service, however, knew how many people would be there — or at least it should have known — but didn’t adequately convey this to school officials, who were expecting half as many people as showed up for each session.

So who should pay the repair bill? It would hardly seem fair to ask the school district and its taxpayers to. Civil Service should, and without further ado. It’s obvious these fields will be useless for spring lacrosse, but fall soccer is a reasonable target.
