Authorities closed a portion of Liberty Street downtown for several hours Thursday morning and afternoon after a driver wedged his rental truck under the railroad bridge.

The accident occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. between Broadway and Erie Boulevard, and resulted in minor structural damage to the bridge. A portion of the six-wheel truck’s top was peeled back about 10 feet and wedged underneath.

The road reopened in the afternoon after Amtrak engineers determined the bridge to be safe, though one of the 28 supporting girders appeared twisted. An Amtrak spokesman said late Thursday afternoon that train traffic was not delayed.

The driver, who remained on the scene, declined comment. A tow truck arrived at 11:55 a.m. to attempt to extricate the vehicle. It was driven out soon after.

Schenectady police did not immediately disclose the driver’s name, or if any charges have been or will be filed.
