The Saratoga County Department of Motor Vehicles office will be moving to a different part of the Wilton Mall this summer.
The new location will have lower rent, saving the county about $54,000 over the five years of the lease, said County Clerk Craig Hayner.
“We’re very pleased,” he said.
The office has been just inside the mall entrance near Dick’s Sporting Goods for nearly a decade. The mall has a commercial tenant that wants that space.
The new DMV location, which will be slightly smaller, will be in what’s now vacant space opposite an entrance to the Bon-Ton store, in a different wing of the mall.
The move won’t happen until about Aug. 1, but the county Board of Supervisors will be considering the new lease with Macerich Co., the mall’s owners, later this month. The board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee approved the proposal Wednesday.
The proposed lease would last five years. Hayner said he doesn’t want a longer lease, because of the trend for people to do their motor vehicle transactions online.
He said the Wilton office, one of three DMV offices operated by the county, processes 70,000 to 75,000 transactions per year. “We are a destination. People will find us wherever we go,” he added.
