The Niskayuna Central School District will be led by an official from Capital Region BOCES until an interim superintendent can be found, district officials said Friday.

The Board of Education is to meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. to appoint Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent Charles Dedrick as acting superintendent.

In his role as BOCES district superintendent, Dedrick serves as BOCES chief executive officer. He oversees 1,200 staff and more than 300 educational services, according to the BOCES website.

He was appointed BOCES district superintendent in 2008. He previously served as district superintendent in Cohoes.

The appointment is scheduled for the last official day that outgoing Superintendent Susan Kay Salvaggio will be on the district books.

The board approved a separation agreement with Salvaggio at a special meeting held April 4. The board approved the agreement in a 4-3 vote.

Included in the agreement was a $139,000 payout to Salvaggio, as well as health coverage. Salvaggio’s contract wasn’t to end until June 2015.

The short-term goal for the board is to name a full interim superintendent. The board is working with Dedrick to select that person.

Dedrick is to take over the district as acting superintendent after Tuesday’s vote and continue until an interim head can be found.

Board members haven’t explained why Salvaggio was essentially ousted. The agreement also included a provision that the district would make no disparaging remarks about her.

But the school board did say “philosophical differences have arisen relating to expected performance,” which was not explained further.

The board last week approved a $77.3 million spending plan to go to voters.
