Baseball: Capovani hurls one-hitter for Schalmont

Matt Capovani hurled a one-hitter, and Bob Anderson became the all-time wins leader at Schalmont after the the Sabres edged Mechanicville, 1-0, in a Colonial Council game.

Capovani struck out 15 and walked one in Scalmont’s second one-hitter in as many days. The junior saw his no-hit bid end with two down in the seventh when Nate Popiel singled.

Popiel pitched a two-hitter and fanned nine. Schalmont (2-0, 2-0) scored its run on a throwing error in the sixth.

Anderson picked up his 301st win, one more than former Schalmont coach Bruce Bouck.

Alex Minnick had a double and single, Jared Paigo had two singles, and both drove in two runs in Voorheesville’s 9-1 win over Cohoes.

Voorheesville (2-0, 2-0) pitcher Kristian Singh gave up three hits in the five-inning game and struck out eight. Jesse Curtain had a double, single and an RBI for Cohoes (1-2, 1-3).

Connor McDonough had three RBI, two on a single, and Tyler McDonough and Joey Vandenburgh both scored three times as Lansingburgh (3-0, 3-1) beat Cobleskill-Richmondville, 12-2.

Warren Mau doubled for the Bulldogs.

Kevin Smith and Mike Stanley hit home runs as Columbia overpowered Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 9-4, in a Suburban Council game.

Codey Piel had a double and single for the Blue Devils (2-0, 2-0), and, like Smith and Stanley, finished with two RBI. Brendan Van Allen homered for the Spartans (1-1, 1-1).

Josh Hayner and Matt Bloise had two hits apiece, and Shenendehowa (2-0, 3-0) stayed perfect with an 8-4 win at Bethlehem.

Austin Herrmann doubled for the Eagles (1-1, 2-1).

Tyler Hoffman homered among 10 Shaker hits, and the Blue Bison downed Mohonasen, 10-1.

Luke Hansen had four hits including two triples and a double, drove in four runs and scored three in Catholic Central’s 11-0, five-inning Big 10 win over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.

Dylan Pollock limited the Knights to one hit.

Jeff Gritsavage hit a home run and single in Albany’s 10-0 win over Bishop Maginn.

Schenectady’s Giuseppe Carberg hit a tying RBI single in the seventh, and the Patriots and LaSalle were even at three in the eighth when the darkness halted the Big 10 game. LaSalle starter Jake Bernardo struck out 13, including nine of the first 10 batters he faced.

Jordan Van Nostrand scattered five hits, struck out 12 and drove in a pair of runs with two singles to lift Mayfield (2-0, 2-0) over Duanesburg, 8-4, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Pat McGarry had a double and single for the Eagles (1-3, 1-3).

Joe Winsman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and struck out 12 to lift Canajoharie over Galway, 9-4.

Buck Anderson had a double, single and two RBI for the Cougars (1-1, 1-1). Sam Uline paced the Eagles (1-1, 1-1) with a double and two singles.

Dylan Klock hit a tie-breaking RBI double in the sixth and Devan Battisti followed with an RBI single to give Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville (2-0, 2-0) a 5-3 WAC win over Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

Brad Smith went the distance for the Wolves, allowing four hits with 14 strikeouts. Taylor O’Connor doubles for the Bulldogs.

Shayne Richards sparked a five-run first with a two-run double, and Kealan Hitt struck out 13 as Hoosick Falls opened its season with a 6-2 Wasaren League win over Cambridge.

Wyatt Whitman had a double and two singles for the Panthers. Brady Sausville had a double and single for the Indians (0-3, 0-3).

Conway Gillespie and Alex Carlo both singled and doubled and combined for five runs as part of a 16-3 Hoosic Valley (3-0, 3-0) win at Stillwater (2-1, 2-1).
