The Albany Devils are headed into the American Hockey League playoffs on a hot streak.

Harri Pesonen had a goal and an assist Saturday as the Devils defeated the Springfield Falcons, 5-2, in the regular-season finale at the Times Union Center. In winning their fifth straight game, the Devils finished 40-23-5-8 — the team’s first-40-win season.

“I think it’s a testament to the coaching staff, the players, guys who have been in and out of the lineup, guys who have been up and down,” said assistant captain Tim Sestito. “We’ve had guys contribute the whole year. It’s exciting, but that’s all wiped clean now, and we’re looking forward to the playoffs.’’

The Devils will be the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and face the St. John’s IceCaps in the opening round. The first two games of the best-of-five series will be played at the Times Union Center on Friday and Saturday, with a 7 p.m. start.

David Wohlberg set the tone for the Devils, scoring just seven seconds into the game — the fastest goal to start a game this season.
