Ex-Saratoga man gets 9 years for robbery

A former Saratoga Springs resident was sentenced to nine years in prison for robbing an acquaintance

A former Saratoga Springs resident was sentenced to nine years in prison for robbing an acquaintance outside a McDonald’s, Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III said.

John L. Zippo, 45, was sentenced by Saratoga County Court Judge Jerry J. Scarano on Thursday after being convicted of attempted first-degree robbery.

He was also sentenced to five years in prison for an unrelated felony assault charge, for an assault at the Saratoga County Jail in June while he was being held on the robbery charge. That sentence will be served concurrently.

Murphy said that on April 5, 2013, Zippo arranged to sell used electronics to an acquaintance in the parking lot of the McDonald’s restaurant off Exit 15 in Wilton. Instead, he said Zippo held a small knife to the throat of the acquaintance’s girlfriend and stole more than $500 in cash, as well as the victim’s cellphone.

Zippo was located by state police within hours, based on a partial license plate match.

Zippo blamed heroin addiction for the robbery, but Murphy noted that he was on parole when the robbery occurred and has five previous felony convictions going back to 1989.

Murphy said the assault at the jail was unprovoked, and Zippo broke another inmate’s nose.

“I am pleased with the sentence imposed by Judge Scarano, as it takes a violent individual off the street,” Murphy said.
