The Erie Canal won't be opening Saturday due to heavy rainfall.
After projecting a Saturday start to the navigation season, the state Canal Corporation now plans to open early next week, said Shane Mahar, a Canal Corp. spokesman
"We'll have a better idea on the exact date once we get through this current rain event and see how conditions are reacting to what Mother Nature has dropped on us," Mahar said.
High waters and fast flows caused by Tuesday and today's rain have halted crews efforts to put navigation buoys in place, he said.
"Everything is in a state of good repair and good working order, and our crews are ready to go," he said. "What's not ready are the navigation aids."
The Canal Corp. wants to be sure boating conditions are safe for work crews and boaters before opening the canal to navigation, he said.
