A trucker Thursday received a cellphone-related violation — the 52nd such ticket issued by Rotterdam police since a crackdown began April 10 — as well as other citations after flipping over his tractor-trailer at Thruway Exit 26.
Ryan N. Koehler, 30, of Walnutport, Pa., lost control of his vehicle while heading west on the entrance ramp from Interstate 890, causing it to overturn and slide into a rail. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to Ellis Hospital.
According to police, Koehler told authorities he was talking on a cellphone when the accident occurred. He was ticketed on charges of unreasonable speed, failure to keep right and operating a motor vehicle while using a cellphone.
Rotterdam police, citing National Traffic Highway Safety Administration data, note more than 3,300 people were killed and about 421,000 injured in 2012 in crashes involving distracted drivers. Town police have employed a special detail to combat distracted driving since last month.
