Top-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology scored the game’s first seven goals and never looked back as it cruised to an 11-6 victory over Union in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament on Wednesday.
The Dutchmen end their season 15-4.
Matt Hossack had a goal and an assist as the Tigers (20-0) took a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
Goals by Casey Jackson, Kyle Aquin and Allister Warren in a 2:12 span early in the second quarter gave RIT a 7-0 lead.
Jonathan Andrews got the Dutchmen’s first goal with 8:49 left in the second. Charlie Ross scored a man-up goal with 5:39 remaining to make it 7-2. But a late second-quarter goal by Eddie Kiesa and a tally by Jack Krzyston eight seconds into the third quarter restored the Tigers’ seven-goal lead.
“It’s virtually impossible to come back from a 7-0 deficit against a solid team like RIT,” Union coach Paul Wehrum said. “RIT is as good a team as I have ever seen in Division III. I’m very proud of our effort in fighting back, something we have done all year.”
Peter Richardson had a goal and an assist to lead the Dutchmen. Paul Alberti, Tom Stanton and Daniel Kycia also scored. Richard Gregory had two assists, and goalie
Stefan Basile stopped 14 shots.
Aquin and Jackson finished with two goals and an assist each for RIT. Kiesa and Krzyston each had two goals, and goalie Pat Johnston made 24 saves.
RIT finished 3-0 against Union, posting a 13-11 win in the Liberty League championshp game May 4 and an 8-7 regular-season victory on April 16.
