The state Department of Labor says that the unemployment rate in New York is at its lowest level since December 2008.

The department released preliminary figures Thursday showing that the unemployment rate in April fell by 0.2 percent to 6.7 percent, which is still above the national average of 6.3 percent.

While New York City saw 0.1 percent decrease in unemployment since March, the area outside of the city fell from 6 percent to 5.8 percent.

There were significant gains in nonfarm jobs in New York City, Long Island, Buffalo and Poughkeepsie since April 2013.

Syracuse, Ithaca, Glens Falls, Elmira, the Capital Region and Binghamton have all lost nonfarm jobs since last year.

The manufacturing sector lost 5,900 jobs since last year, more than any other industry sector.
