NY man gets up to 6 years in ticket machine scam

A New York City man has been sentenced to up to six years in prison for his role in a skimming scam

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A New York City man has been sentenced to up to six years in prison for his role in a skimming scam involving Long Island Rail Road ticket vending machines.

Nassau County prosecutors say Valer Zaharia pleaded guilty last month to grand larceny and conspiracy charges. He admitting using tiny hidden cameras and bank card "skimmers" to steal money and financial information from customers using the machines.

Zaharia also agreed to forfeit about $61,000 that was found in his Queens apartment.

His wife, Teodora Zaharia was sentenced to nine months in jail last month for her role in the scheme.

Two other defendants have also pleaded guilty. They are expected to be sentenced later this week.
