Albany Academy’s Michael Haelen rallied from losing the first set to beat Lars Olson of Doane Stuart, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, and win the Section II boys’ tennis individual title Wednesday at Central Park.
The match between the No. 2-seed Haelen and the top-seeded Olson took nearly three hours.
In the third-place match, third-seeded Alex Fedorov of Guilderland defeated No. 5 seed Nick Spoor of Ballston Spa, 6-1, 6-2.
Albany Academy also won the doubles title as Max Benson and Peter Campito beat Niskayuna’s Nick Lu and Jason Tang, 6-2, 6-4.
The third-place match was an all-Guilderland affair as Michael Zhu and Bill Dong defeated Salil Chaudhry and Connor O’Brien, 6-3, 6-1.
The top three singles players and doubles teams play in the state tournament beginning next Thursday at the U.S. Tennis Center in New York.
