Pat and Tom Valachovic were hoping for a couple more steak sandwiches.
The couple drove from Johnstown to Schenectady Thursday night to visit Morrette’s King Steak House on Erie Boulevard.
But a rush in business — the restaurant’s owners on Wednesday said they would be closing at the end of the week — meant dwindling supplies inside Morrette’s by early evening. The Valachovics and many others were unable to order their favorite comfort foods.
Earlier plans have changed — the landmark will not open today.
“We can’t,” manager Sandy Bielecki said Thursday evening inside the bustling restaurant. “We just ran out of meat.”
About 30 people waiting in line at the door dispersed when told the crowded restaurant could accept no more customers. A sign posted at the front door read “Please understand we cannot serve any more guests at this time. Sorry.”
People still kept driving to the 67-year-old restaurant, and parked their cars on Jefferson Street — right next to Morrette’s — in Morrette’s jammed rear parking lot and in the lot of the former Grossman’s Bargain Outlet next door.
“My dad used to come here; he was with the Locomotive,” said Pat Valachovic of Charles Dwyer and his affiliation with the American Locomotive Co. “My dad passed, we would come just for his memory. This is sad to see it go.”
HERE is Jeff Wilkin May 22nd story on Morrette's closing.
Richelle Przybycien, 26, of Ballston Lake, was waiting in line with her daughter, Michaela, 8, and her mother, longtime Morrette’s fan Rhonda Poli of Charlton. “I was looking forward to having it one last time,” she said of the steak specials.
“I don’t know where I’m going to get a good steak sandwich now,” added Sandy Alfree of Schenectady.
“Mike’s,” said Thomas Alfree, Sandy’s son, referring to nearby Mike’s Hot Dogs. “These are the best two places in town.”
Dave Kroll, 65, of Glenville, was able to order an open-faced steak sandwich during dinner with his son and daughter.
“I grew up on these things,” Kroll said. “I loved this place. . . . I think it’s sad. Where else you going to get a steak sandwich like this?”
