A Galway man was arrested early Sunday after city police said he led them on a brief vehicle and foot chase.

Police said they tried to stop Jesse J. MacKenzie, 25, of Route 29, after observing him committing a traffic violation in his Jeep Grand Cherokee about 1:45 a,m. on Broadway north of Lake Avenue. MacKenzie, however, attempted to flee, eventually pulling into the parking lot of the Stewart’s Shop at the intersection of Broadway and Van Dam Street and narrowly missing a pedestrian.

MacKenzie then fled on foot, police said, running behind the store. He was found a short time later, police said.

MacKenzie was charged with a felony count of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest and vehicle and traffic violations including inadequate headlights, failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, consuming alcoholic beverages in a vehicle and refusing a pre-screen test
