School Softball: Eagles surprise Shenendehowa

Carrie Maniccia singled and scored the tying run in the seventh inning, then singled in two runs in the eighth as Bethlehem upset top-seeded Shenendehowa, 5-2, in a Section II Class AA semifinal game Wednesday at Veeder Park.

K.K. Palmerino got Maniccia home with a squeeze bunt in the seventh, and also doubled.

Shenendehowa had taken a 2-0 lead on Courtey McDonnell’s two-run homer in the second inning.

This was the second straight year that the Eagles came from the No.5 seed and knocked off top-seeded Shenendehowa.

Columbia got a two-hitter from eighth-grader Madison Burns in beating Colonie, 2-0, in the other “AA’’ semi.

The 19-4 Lady Blue Devils got both of their runs in the third inning, with two out.

Catcher Alana VanDenburg reached base on an error to start the rally. Haley VanVorst followed with a single, and freshman Jennah Hogan singled in VanDenburg. After a passed ball moved both runners up, Katy Kennedy singled to make it 2-0.

CLASS A

Averill Park beat South Glens Falls, 5-1, to snap a four-year losing streak to the Lady Bulldogs in the Class A semis.

Torey Chenette doubled in a run, and Kelly Donnelly had two hits and scored twice for the 17-3 winners.

Troy went to 20-1 with its 18th straight win, a 3-0 shutout of Queensbury in the other Class A semi,

Freshman Hunter Levesque threw a four-hitter, and worked out of a bases-loaded spot late in the game to get the win. She struck out 10, and also knocked in a run. Kaitlin DelSignore added a two-run home run.

CLASS BB

Freshman Isabelle Dechiaro had a three-hitter and an RBI double, as Cohoes beat Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, 10-0, to win the Class BB championship.

Cohoes beat Ravena twice in the Colonial Council season, 15-0 and 17-1. Bryanna Holdrige also had an RBI double for the 20-2 Colonial champs.

CLASS C

Duanesburg reached the finals for the first time since 2011 by beating Waterford-Halfmoon, 6-5, on Jenna Lees’ RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning in their semifinal.

Lees also homered, and Sydney Foland went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles for 20-2 top-seeded Duanesburg, which will play Greenwich in Friday’s championship game.

The 14-9 Witches earned a shot at their fourth straight Class C title with a 6-2 win over Wasaren League rival Hoosic Valley.

CLASS D

Loudonville Christian School scored three times in the home sixth to beat Hartford, 4-2, in the semifinals. Jasmine Mullally knocked in the winning run, and catcher Ange Stephano hit a double and triple and scored twice for the 16-2 winners, who will play top-seeded defending champ Fort Ann in Friday’s championship game.
