Lexie Ball made a save with 10 seconds left to preserve the lead in Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s 12-11 Class B regional title-game win over Somers Saturday at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn.
The Spartans had lost to Section I opponents twice before in regional play, and with the breakthrough victory advance to the state final four for the first time. The Spartans (14-5) will play either Manhasset (Section VIII, 16-1) or Sayville (Section XI, 14-4) Friday in a semifinal game at SUNY-Cortland.
Nicole Beardsley scored six goals for Burnt Hills, and Ball finished with 12 saves.
Burnt Hills scored five unanswered goals in the second half to open up an 11-7 lead, and held on for its fourth playoff win and fifth triumph in a row overall.
Somers (Section I, 17-1-1) made its state tournament debut.
Suffern (Section I, 16-3) got seven goals from Dana Gisonno in a 15-9 Class A regional win over Shaker (17-2).
Bronxville (Section I, 12-7-2) posted a 14-4 Class C regional win over Albany Academy (14-5).
Six-time state champion Yorktown (Section I, 16-5) ended Albany Academy’s season, 17-5, in Class B regional action. Matt Balter scored two goals for the Cadets (16-1).
Bronxville (Section I, 17-6) piled up 19 goals in the first half in a 21-3 Class C win over Greenwich (15-4).
