Rotterdam police are warning residents about a national phone scam that has been hitting local businesses.
The scam involves people calling local business owners and identifying themselves as National Grid employees calling to collect on past-due payments.
The caller insists the business is behind on payments and says power will be cut immediately unless payment is received. Then the caller states that the only way to pay is via a prepaid debit card like Green Dot MoneyPak or Vanilla card. Once purchased, the business owner provides the account numbers on the back of the cards. The scammers then drain the card in transactions that are not traceable or reversible.
Police said they’ve received five reports in Rotterdam, two of them from people who have sent money.
Anyone who receives such a call should contact National Grid and town police.
