Owners of large vehicles should pay to park them off local streets

Do we really need another law in Schenectady designed to get people to be considerate of their neighbors?

Apparently so.

On Monday night, the City Council will hold a public hearing on a new ordinance designed to get people to stop parking their giant recreational vehicles and big rigs on local streets, blocking traffic, their neighbors' views and the sun.

We doubt this is the city's most pressing problem. (The other thing they'll be talking about Monday night is whether to park a giant casino in the city.)

But apparently, a handful of RV owners, maybe just one, have been parking their behemoths on narrow city streets instead of spending a few bucks to rent a spot in an RV storage lot.

So it appears Schenectady will need to enact another ordinance that police don't have time to enforce.

Many cities regulate these vehicles by length. Limits generally range from 22 to 35 feet long, 7 to 8 feet wide, and 7 to 8 feet tall. In many places, they can be parked on the street for up 72 consecutive hours, with monthly cumulative limits. Many places require permits for parking big vehicles on the street, which at least might net the city some revenue.

A simple law like that would suffice.

But the city wouldn't need one at all if the owners of these vehicles were just considerate of their neighbors and found other options to storing their oversized vehicles on the streets.
