Schalmont avenged a regional loss to Ogdensburg Free Academy last year by pounding OFA, 11-2, in the New York State tournament Class B regional baseball championship Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
The 24-1 Sabres, who stretched their winning streak to 20 straight games, face Clinton of Section III Saturday at Binghamton University at 1 p.m. in the state semis.
“It was nice. It was real sweet,” said Schalmont head coach Bob Anderson. “We got up, 1-0, but we made a couple of defensive mistakes in the fifth inning, and OFA scored two quick runs on us to take the lead.
“But we jumped right back. I wasn’t worried about these guys losing momentum. They got right back in it, and we put up four runs in the sixth to take the lead again. Then we tacked on six more runs in the seventh. I’m very proud of these guys.”
Senior left-hander Greg Musk fired a two-hitter and struck out 12 for the Sabres. He allowed only one walk, and both of the runs he gave up were unearned.
Jake Defayette was the big hitter for Schalmont with a triple, two doubles and a sacrifice fly for three RBI. Anthony Yezzo also plated three runs with a bases-loaded triple.
Other big hitters for Schalmont were Brion Dufek (double, single, sacrifice fly, two RBI), Dom Toma (two singles, one RBI) and Joe Wignot (RBI single).
Hoosic Valley also advanced to the state semis with a 5-0 win over Bruston-Moira in the Class C regional final at Shuttleworth Park.
The 22-3 Indians scored four times in the third inning to put the game away. Jt Sawyer was the winning pitcher and threw six innings.
Alex Carlo went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles for Hoosic Valley.
In the Class A reginal final at The College of Saint Rose’s Bob Bellizzi Field, Averill Park crushed Massena, 16-1.
