Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle accident Friday night on the Thruway in Guilderland.
State police said Cody J. Veverka, 23, of South Cairo, Greene County, and Alicia M. Tamboia, 24, of Wingdale, Duchess County, were pronounced dead at the scene after they were ejected from a sedan in the crash.
Veverka and Tamboia were riding in a Volkswagen GLI driven by Tyler S. Pascuzzi, 24, of Coxsackie, shortly before midnight when it hit a Honda Civic driven by Brian T. Miller, 29, of Schenectady, troopers said. Pascuzzi was driving the Volkswagen west in the center lane at a high rate of speed, troopers said.
Miller lost control of his vehicle, which hit the center guide rail and came to a stop, but the Volkswagen started to spin and continued west before colliding with an Old Dominion Freight Lines tractor-trailer, troopers said. Upon impact, the Volkswagen split in two and Veverka and Tamboia were ejected.
A fourth sedan traveling west then hit parts of the Volkswagen, causing damage to the vehicle but no further injuries.
Pascuzzi and Miller were taken by ambulance to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, and the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
No tickets were issued, but state police continue to investigate. The left lane of the Thruway westbound between exits 24 and 25 remains closed to traffic, and motorists familiar with the area are encouraged to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.
