Sometimes, progress hurts a little.
Fortunately for traditionalists in Schenectady, the owners of Proctors know when to say when.
The great old marquee attached to the front of the historic theater is getting a makeover.
The biggest change will be to the familiar black letters that announce the latest events. For decades, the letters have been removed and replaced, one-by-one, by a person climbing up there on a ladder.
In their place will be a modern high-def, computerized screen with moving images.
For those of us who love the charm of the marquee, little else will change. The golden canopy, flashing light pattern and ornamental details will be spruced up, but will remain.
Saying goodbye to a quaint tradition is always a little tough. But baseball traditionalists came to love lights at Wrigley. Volkswagen lovers learned to appreciate working heaters. CDs, you have to admit, sound better than vinyl.
We'll fuss a little at first, then we'll come around. We think we'll come to like this change pretty quickly.
