State police are investigating what caused the driver of a Price Chopper tractor-trailer to veer into the Route 29 overpass on the Northway early Friday morning, damaging the abutment and closing a lane of the highway for several hours.
Troopers said Timothy Dennison, 49, of Galway, was driving north on Interstate 87 when his rig left the east side of the highway and veered into a guide rail. The truck then smashed into the overpass and continued north before rolling over into a wooded area on the shoulder of the highway.
Dennison was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The tractor-trailer was loaded with food at the time of the crash.
The crash resulted in brief lane closures while the truck was towed, resulting in traffic snarls in the Spa City near Exits 14 and 15.
State Department of Transportation inspectors closed the right lane of the highway until repairs could be made to the overpass and guide rails, reopening the lane to traffic about 2:30 p.m.
