Second baseman Juan Santana drove in five runs from the ninth spot in the batting order Sunday as the Tri-City ValleyCats beat the State College Spikes, 12-2, in a New York-Penn League game at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
Santana, who joined the team last week from Greeneville of the Appalachian League, had an RBI double in the third inning, knocked in three runs with a two-base hit in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh as the ValleyCats won for the fourth time in five games on their six-game homestand, which concludes tonight at 7 against the Spikes.
State College catcher Brian O’Keefe, a Colonie High School graduate, went 1-for-3.
After Santana’s first double cut a 2-0 State College lead in half, Tri-City scored four runs in the fourth, with catcher
Jamie Ritchie knocking in a run and Santana clearing the bases with his second double of the game.
Ritchie drew a bases-loaded walk and Bobby Boyd hit a sac fly in a three-run fifth, the ValleyCats tacked on three more runs in the eighth, as Santana hit a sac fly before Ryan Bottger, Derek Fisher and Nick Tanielu hit consecutive RBI singles.
Austin Chrismon pitched the first five innings for Tri-City to get his fourth win.
After tonight’s game, the ValleyCats play at Connecticut for two games, then return home Thursday for a three-game series with the Staten Island Yankees.
