Baseball: Athletics seek regional title

ALBANY — The Albany Athletics will begin defense of their AABC North Atlantic Regional championship today against the Long Island Gamecocks at Keenholts Park in Guilderland at 11 a.m.

The Albany Twilight League is hosting the tournament, which will have games at Keenholts Park and Central Park in Schenectady, for the fifth straight year.

The Athletics (34-11) have won the regional title three times, including in 2012, when they went on to win the national Stan Musial World Series.

Also representing the Twilight League in the regionals are the Waterford Nationals (19-7) and the Bluehawks (20-10).

The Bluehawks lost to the Athletics in the Upper New York State Tournament finals earlier this week, but gained entry to the regionals when the South Bergen, N.J., representative withdrew at the last minute.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Kyle Mohr pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts, and Dom Bianchi had two doubles and a single as the Schenectady Aces opened pool play at the 22-under NABF College World Series with an 11-1 win over the Sandusky Grays of Ohio.

Mike Gentile and Phil Mascatelli both had a double and single for Schenectady, and Kevin Polturak added three singles.

Dave Wilgocki collected a double and two singles, and Sean McMullen had a sacrifice fly in the Aces’ second game, a 7-1 loss to the Crystal Lake Cardinals of Illinois.

Dutchmen out

LITTLE FALLS — The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs ousted the Albany Dutchmen, 3-2, in the first round of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League playoffs.

The Dawgs begin a best-of-three series at 6:35 tonight against the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park.

Starr sparks win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Ryan Starr hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to give Rotterdam the lead, and it went on to a 4-2 victory over Piedmont (Del.) in the Babe Ruth 14-year-old Mid-Atlantic regionals.

Rotterdam faces Altoona (Pa.) at 4 p.m. today.
