Terrell Joyce contributed a pair of hits, driving in two runs, and Tri-City pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts in a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory over the Auburn Doubledays Wednesday night at Falcon Park.
It was the fifth straight win for the 36-16 ValleyCats, who began a six-game road trip after an off day Tuesday.
Joyce, who has carried the Tri-Valley offense since many of the team’s sluggers earned call-ups to Class A, belted a ground-rule double to left in the second inning and scored on a Jose Solano grounder to short.
In the third inning, Joyce was again involved in the scoring. With one out, Jamie Ritchie and Nick Tanielu each singled. Ricky Gringas was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then Joyce singled to left, driving in both Ritchie and Tanielu.
Auburn (23-28) got one run back in the fourth when D.K. Carey doubled and Jeff Gardner singled him in.
Auburn then scratched for another run in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Derick Velazquez. With two outs, Brian Langlois doubled to right, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Matthew Page.
But Velazquez picked up his third save after striking out the side.
Starter Joe Musgrove (5-1) got the win and struck out eight for the ValleyCats.
