John Dooley met up with “Kara” in a Yahoo! chatroom and was hoping to coax who he thought was a 15-year-old Saratoga Springs girl into a tryst with vodka and sex toys.
The 57-year-old Level III sex offender from Rochester rented a motel room in Saratoga and traveled there in the hopes of meeting “Kara” in May 2012. Only the girl he expected to videotape turned out to be an undercover Saratoga Springs police officer.
Dooley was charged in U.S. District Court with attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, attempted production of child pornography and committing a felony offense involving a minor while already a registered sex offender. He was found guilty on all counts during a three-day trial last year and on Tuesday was ordered to serve up to 45 years in federal prison.
Dooley, who had two previous convictions for sexual abuse of a minor, had been communicating with “Kara” for more than a month via Yahoo! Messenger. During the online communications, Dooley was repeatedly told the girl he was talking with was a minor.
Still, Dooley indicated he would travel to Saratoga Springs, rent a room and have sex with the girl. He also indicated he would capture their tryst with digital photography and video.
Police who arrested Dooley in his motel room found various sexual devices, vodka, computer equipment, cameras, and presents intended for the girl, including lingerie.
