Authorities said a Ballston Spa man faces grand larceny charges after he used credit cards he lifted from stolen purses to purchase gift cards at various retailers throughout the area.
Shane S. Curran, 43, was charged in City Court Tuesday with two felony counts of second-degree identity theft, two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of stolen property, and three felony counts of grand larceny. The charges followed his arraignment in Milton Town Court last month on counts forgery, identity theft and criminal possession of stolen property.
Saratoga Springs police Lt. Robert Jillson said the latest charges against Curran stem from stolen items that were found in his motel room in the city after his initial arrest. Motel staff discovered items that didn’t appear to belong to him in the room during a routine visit and alerted city police.
“They went in to clean the room and it just didn’t look right,” he said.
Curran was originally arrested on July 27 after he used the personal identifying information of two separate people to purchase gift cards at the Round Lake Road Hannaford and at CVS Pharmacy. Further investigation revealed he had a number items — mostly purses and personal property— that had been taken from elsewhere and reported stolen, the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department said.
