A city man impaled himself on the gate surrounding Union College Thursday morning, even though there was an open entrance a few feet away.
At about 6:45 a.m. Thursday campus safety officers responded to a report of a person impaled on the Blue Gate at Nott Terrace and Union Street. The gate is near the main open entrance to the college.
Gualberto Cartagena, 28, of Schenectady, told officers he attempted to jump the gate from South Terrace on campus to Union Street when he lost his footing, slipped and impaled his right side several inches deep near his ribs on a fence spike.
The man was able to free himself and await emergency services. He was transported to Ellis Hospital.
