The East Greenbush Town Board voted Wednesday night to pass a Planned Development District application for a proposed casino over to the town Planning Board.
The decision allows the developers and the town to move forward with plans for the Capital View Casino and Resort. The planning and zoning boards will review the project and seek to rezone the site and meet state environmental requirements.
“This resolution is the beginning of the process and part of this process is planning and zoning in regard to development,” Supervisor Keith Langley said during the Town Board meeting. “It’s not our decision to make. That will go to the Planning Board and Zoning Board.”
The site on Thompson Hill is now zoned residential, but that would have to be changed to accommodate a casino and hotel. The project also has to receive approval under the State Environmental Quality Review Act.
Saratoga Harness Racing and Churchill Downs are pitching the proposed East Greenbush casino, which will house 1,506 slot machines and 56 table games along with a 100-room hotel, restaurants and events center.
The Town Board meeting drew hundreds of local residents, both for and against a casino. A majority of people spoke out against the casino, expressing concerns about a casino being built in their neighborhood.
