Every year when the New York Giants and New York Jets play their NFL preseason game in East Rutherford, N.J., WNYT (Ch. 13) general manager Steve Baboulis receives phone calls and emails from fans asking if the game will be on his station.
Half the time, he says yes. The other times, he has to say no.
This is the year that he has to tell the Capital Region football fans no.
Tonight’s game between the New York rivals won’t be on WNYT. The station carries most of the Giants’ preseason games because when the Giants are the home team against the Jets in the exhibition game, they have the TV rights.
This year, the Jets are the home team, and they control the TV rights. Their preseason games aren’t allowed to be shown in the Capital Region, unless it’s a nationally televised game. Even when New York sports channel SNY re-airs Jets’ preseason games, they are blacked out here.
“The Giants don’t have the right to give us that game,” Baboulis said.
Still, the fans don’t seem to understand that concept. Baboulis knows the phones will be ringing shortly after the opening kickoff.
“We do get a few phone calls every other year,” Baboulis said. “I think people understand it, and some people don’t. Unfortunately, then you go to the Time Warner [Cable] guide and you see 11 p.m. or 2 a.m. [on] SNY, and they black it out. They don’t show it here at all. The only way you can see it is on NFL Network if you have it.”
Fans can listen to the game on WPYX-FM (106.5). NFL Network will re-air the game at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Baboulis wishes he could have the Giants-Jets game every year, regardless of the home team.
“It’s the most popular game of the exhibition season,” Baboulis said. “We love to have it.”
It’s Travers Stakes time, and most of the Capital Region’s television stations will have specials tonight on Saturday’s race.
WNYT will televise its half-hour Travers special at 7:30 p.m. ABC10 (WTEN) will have a one-hour special at 9 p.m., and it will re-air on FOX23 (WXXA) at 11. Time Warner Cable News will televise a 30-minute show at 9 p.m., with re-airs Saturday at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
