A New York City man and father of three was fatally shot late Monday in the Vale neighborhood, according to police and family.
Danny Russell, 44, was gunned down on Catherine Street near Victory Avenue about 11:30 p.m.
Family members said Russell was in Schenectady for the weekend to celebrate his niece’s birthday. The family even went to Lake George to spend time at the beach, brother Carlos Seebarran said. They returned earlier Monday evening.
Family members knew of no apparent motive for the shooting.
“He was a beautiful person,” Seebarran said Tuesday near the scene. “He never harmed nobody in his life.”
Police continued their search for Russell’s killer Tuesday but would not discuss a possible motive.
Police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken said police received multiple calls of shots fired in the area. Officers arrived to find Russell lying in the street.
Police recovered a number of shell casings in the area, though McCracken didn’t have the exact number.
“It’s early in the investigation,” McCracken said. “We’re still following leads.”
Russell was the father of two daughters and a son, his brother said. He was a New York Knicks fan, as well as a fan of the Jets. He was a New Yorker, family said.
He left Seebarran’s apartment shortly before he was shot, though Seebarran was unsure why. Soon after, Seebarran got word his brother had been shot and ran outside. He ran to his brother and found him still breathing.
Seebarran and other family members questioned the timeliness of the ambulance response. Seebarran said he pleaded with police to get an ambulance.
According to police and ambulance company times, the span from first call to the time Russell was in an ambulance and en route to Ellis Hospital was 10 minutes.
The initial shots-fired call came in at 11:31 p.m. It was upgraded to a medical call one minute later. Police were on the scene by 11:33 and paramedics were there by 11:35.
A Mohawk ambulance was on scene by 11:33 and 42 seconds, according to a Mohawk spokeswoman.
The ambulance service is headquartered in Vale on State Street, about three blocks from the shooting scene, and the ambulance arrived 41 seconds after receiving the call to respond, the official said.
They had Russell in the ambulance and on the way to Ellis Hospital at 11:41 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The killing is the second in Schenectady this year. Angel M. Carrion, 28, was shot and killed June 27 inside a home on Main Avenue. No arrests have been made in that case.
