Saratoga Springs man accused of DWI after truck strikes building

City police said a drunken driver with open containers in his truck careened onto a sidewalk on Rail

City police said a drunken driver with open containers in his truck careened onto a sidewalk on Railroad Place on Friday morning, striking a building and colliding with four parked cars.

Jeffrey M. Rubertone, 42, of Saratoga Springs, was charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs or alcohol and reckless driving, in addition to a felony count of driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for violations of unlawfully driving on the sidewalk, consumption of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle and improper lane use.

Lt. Robert Jillson said Rubertone was headed south on Railroad Place about 9:35 a.m. when his Dodge truck veered across the opposite lane at the Division Street intersection, hopped the curb and grazed a mixed-use building on Railroad Place. The truck then struck four parked cars and a light pole and toppled a tree before coming to a stop.

Jillson said no one was injured in the crash and there didn’t appear to be any person or vehicle in the path of the truck. He said the incident could have unfolded a lot differently had it occurred several weeks earlier, during the thoroughbred meet at Saratoga Race Course.

“Lucky we didn’t have anyone hit by the truck,” he said. “We were pretty fortunate. It could have been a lot worse.”
