Police found a suspicious package near the site of Saturday’s Rail to Trail race, and the race route was changed as a result.
Gloversville police checking the trail about 8:30 a.m., before the 5K and 10K runs, found a red nylon bag with a slow cooker inside near West Pine and Fifth streets. Because they were unable to determine what was in the pot, police, with the aid of the Gloversville Fire Department, sealed off the area from pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
The race was held, but with a detour around the sealed-off area. Meanwhile, a state police bomb disposal unit was called in and determined there was nothing hazardous in the cooker.
Pressure cookers filled with pellets and nails were used in a pair of explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, with the resulting blasts killing three people and injuring more than 170 others.
