Virus shuts down Schenectady city server

Schenectady police are investigating the source of a virus that infected 15 city-owned computer systems today and shut the city’s server down for most of the day.

The server was shut down as a precaution after an employee downloaded software containing a hidden “bot virus,” police said in a news release. The virus began to send out emails with the subject line “Access All Areas Invoice” that contained a zipped attachment containing the virus. The text of the email suggested the attachment was a PDF of a requested report.

Anyone who received an email from a city email address with the above subject line should immediately delete the email.

The police department’s detective and IT divisions are investigating the incident.
